Comdata, an electronic payment company, ranks as the top employer in the city of Brentwood amid possible uncertainty to its local operations, according to a 2014 financial report.

The city’s comprehensive annual financial report shows that Comdata employs a staff total of 1,107, about six percent of all the city’s employment.

And its been a busy year for Comdata, headquartered at 5301 Maryland Way, which provides fleet and corporate payment solutions to more than 30,000 customers. Last summer, Brentwood Home Page reported the company would be sold to FleetCor Technologies Inc. for $3.45 billion.

The sale closed that December, but it was unclear at the time whether there would be job cutbacks or relocations as a result of the transition.

Then, on June 2, the Nashville Business Journal reported Brentwood’s top employer wanted to downsize its headquarters in favor of a location in Nashville.

Citing sources familiar with the situation, NBJ said the company wanted to cut about one-third of its footprint in the current building, from 201,000-sq.-ft. to about 60,000-70,000-sq.-ft.

Brentwood’s third largest employer, Tractor Supply Company, also has seen its fair share of changes in the last year, moving into its new headquarters at 5401 Virginia Way.

TSC, the country’s largest operator of retail farm and ranch stores, employs a total of 854 staffers.

Last summer, it condensed its three separate offices into a large, Class-A 260,000-sq.-ft. building.

“We looked at Cool Springs and Davidson County, but this is a convenient location,” CEO Greg Sanford said at the time. “The city of Brentwood has been very accommodating the years we’ve been here and we appreciate our partnership.”

Brentwood’s ninth most job provider, Lattimore Black Morgan Cain, said it would be ‘sticking to Brentwood’ after the firm committed to new office space at the developing Hill Center on Franklin Road.

LBMC, one of the country’s top accounting and business consulting firms and the largest regional firm based in Tennessee, employs 300 people in Brentwood.

Sixth-ranked Brookedale Senior Living announced February 2014 it would merge with Emeritus Corporation to create the first national senior living solutions company. Essentially, the merger will bring a Brookedale community within 10 miles of 6.5 million seniors 80-years or older.

The senior living provider also said last year it plans to expand its current corporate headquarters at 111 Westwood Place in Maryland Farms, an 2.1 million investment that would add 162 additional jobs.

According to the city’s report, there are a total of 18,168 jobs in Brentwood as of June 30, 2014.
