Democrat Teri Mai challenging Warner for House District 92 seat

Incumbent District 92 Rep.Todd Warner will face a political newcomer this year as Spring Hill Democrat Teri Mai has launched a campaign for the seat, which covers Marshall County and a portion of south Williamson County.

Mai describes herself as a “lifelong Democrat” who was inspired to run for office after the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade and the onslaught of mass shootings across the nation, including in Middle Tennessee, arguing that many Tennesseans feel disenfranchised.

“I want people like me to feel like they have got somebody who will listen to their vision of District 92,” Mai told The News. “I want to be able to hear what they want to have happened, and I want to represent them to the best of my ability.”

Mai’s is focused on “common sense gun safety reforms,' such as pushing for safe storage legislation and strengthening permitting laws; ensuring reproductive rights; and working on election reforms, such as the reinstatement of voting rights for those who have served time for crimes.

“I cannot, in good conscience, sit back and let the current Republican supermajority continue to run rough-shod over the good people of Middle Tennessee,” Mai said in a news release.

The Texas native moved to Spring Hill in January of 2021, studied at Florida Coastal School of Law, and has since taken a leadership role in the Williamson County Democratic Party.

One of Mai's challenges will not be just running as a Democrat in Tennessee, but in earning the votes of Marshall County residents, adding that she believes there are many Democratic voters and moderate Republicans who want to see change in the state House.

“Some conservatives are realizing that the Republican party today is not the Republican party that they fell in love with, and I truly believe that is happening more often than not,” Mai said.

“If they look at the issues, if they look at the people’s [Republican elected officials and candidates] stances on issues, the Republican party is no longer the party of human rights and personal liberty.”
