Hot Chicken and Waffles - Ruby Sunshine

Hot chicken and waffles

My family and I entered Ruby Sunshine in Franklin on a busy Sunday morning.

We were greeted with mango lemonade and only a smidge of a wait as we tried the new brunch menu at the New Orleans-inspired eatery.

I first discovered Ruby Slipper — the original-style restaurant in the French Quarter — nearly 12 years ago. When it expanded into the Sunshine iteration, it immediately became a brunch spot for my mom and me when she visited Franklin.

We started off our meal with the breakfast margarita, Bloody Mary and rounds of coffee. Beignets, sprinkled with a heavy dose of powdered sugar, brought a little bit of the Big Easy to my plate.

There are some changes to the menu. The grits are standard cheddar, meaning you can't request any variation. Fresh and fluffy, biscuits are baked throughout the hour, with honey butter accompanying. You can now get those in jalapeño cheddar or other variations depending on the season. Hash browns, now in place of breakfast potatoes, were crisp and flavorful.

Southern breakfast - Ruby Sunshine

Every member of our brunch party got something different, one of which was the new hot chicken and waffles with delicious breading and pickles on the side. The rest of us had a couple of favorites that remained on the menu, which were the avocado toast and the Southern breakfast plate.

New angles on the menu include malted pancake batter for pancake sandwiches filled with fun combinations like mac and cheese and PB&J.

More lunch-oriented options are available after 10:30 a.m. and consist of a hot chicken sandwich, pulled pork grilled cheese and a NOLA shrimp bowl.

Ruby Sunshine is always a solid brunch spot — just now with new combinations and standard favorites for you to try.
