Franklin native Grayson Murphy, a former Belmont University guard and standout at Independence High School, has been named to the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2024 NBA Summer League roster.

An Independence High grad, Murphy will join former Tennessee star Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, on a Lakers roster that will compete in the California Classic (San Francisco) July 6-10 and the NBA 2K25 Summer League in Las Vegas July 12-22.

Another Belmont alum, guard Ben Sheppard, will also compete in the summer league. Sheppard, the 26th overall pick of last year’s draft, averaged 4.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in his rookie season with the Indiana Pacers.

Murphy, a 6-2, 189-pound point guard, has spent the past two seasons playing in Germany’s second-highest pro level. He averaged 13.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists and a league-best 2.6 steals per game for Dresden last season, shooting 52 percent from the field overall and 43 percent from three-point range.

In five years at Belmont, the 24-year-old Murphy averaged 9.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

He became the Ohio Valley Conference all-time career leader in assists (775) and steals (281), was a three-time All-OVC First Team and two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year honoree as he led the Bruins to a 104-25 record during his career.

Murphy was the only player in college basketball over the last 30 seasons to put up over 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 700 assists and 250 steals.

In Belmont’s lone NCAA Tournament victory, Murphy had nine points, six rebounds and six assists to guide the Bruins past Temple in 2019.

Murphy also recorded the first triple-double of Belmont's NCAA Division I era.
