Nolensville Fire Department Chief David Windrow

Nolensville's first municipal Fire Chief David Windrow

Nolensville Fire and Rescue Chief David Windrow will retire from the department in January after 41 years of fire service, including four at the helm in Nolensville.

Windrow began his fire service career in 1983 and previously served as deputy fire chief in Brentwood before he was hired by the Town of Nolensville in 2020 to lead its first municipal fire department, which began service in 2021.

His last day with NFR will be Jan. 31, 2025. He told the Williamson Scene he will be taking on a new civilian role as a business development officer with a construction company.

Since establishing the agency, Nolensville has seen an expansion in the NFR staff, training and equipment. The first municipal fire station opened in June and the town has already secured land for a second station.

“We got an excellent group of 15 individuals, a great facility that will carry us 100 years, and the town's first ladder truck will be here in the next eight weeks,” Windrow told the Williamson Scene.

“Whoever becomes [the next] chief, can just pick up that five-year plan and continue to execute it.”

In 2023, Windrow was named Chief of the Year by the Tennessee Fire Chiefs Association and he continues to serve on numerous first responder boards and organizations.

Windrow, a Nolensville resident, said that while he's retiring from his full-time firefighter life he's still open to helping the town, if needed, potentially in an advisory role.

Nolensville Town Manager Victor Lay told the Williamson Scene that a new fire chief won’t be hired until after the new year.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with David over the last four years,” Lay said. “I have deep respect for him both personally and professionally. I will absolutely miss working with him.”
