A Middle Tennessee State University student from Spring Hill sat next to First Lady Melania Trump during President Donald Trump's joint address to Congress Tuesday night.

MTSU shared in a social media post that the First Lady invited MTSU senior Haley Ferguson, a former foster child, to attend the President's address as a recipient of the Fostering the Future scholarship from the "Be Best" campaign. The goal of the scholarship is to prepare students from the foster care community to enter the workforce.

“(Ferguson) benefitted from the first lady’s Fostering the Future initiative and is poised to complete her education and become a teacher,” President Trump said in his speech Tuesday.

Ferguson is a graduate of Williamson County Schools' Independence High School. She is working towards her degree in Elementary Education, according to a release from the First Lady.
