On May 7, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Helen Boerman, 48, an optometric physician at Brentwood Eye Care, pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicare of $6.9 million over three and half years by submitting false claims.
“In addition to her fraudulent Medicare claims, Boerman also made false claims between March 2020 and October 2024 to TennCare, Tennessee’s Medicaid agency, and Federal Employees Health Benefits Programs,” a DOJ news release reads.
Boerman is facing up to five years in federal prison when she’s sentenced in September.
Brentwood Lawyer Pleads Guilty to Filing False Tax Returns
On May 8, David Gebhardt, 54, of Brentwood, pleaded guilty to two counts of filing false individual tax returns, after failing to report millions of dollars in cryptocurrency income.
According to a DOJ news release, Gebhardt, a licensed attorney who ran a consulting business, “caused a tax loss of more than $550,000 by filing false tax returns for 2018 through 2022.”
He faces up to six years in federal prison as well as fines and restitution.
