A Franklin man was shot and wounded on Monday afternoon in what police are investigating as a possible “act of self-defense.”

Just before 3 p.m., Franklin Police responded to the Discount Tobacco Outlet on W. Main St. where they found 44-year-old Jeremy Scruggs with a “non-life threatening” gunshot wound in his leg.

Scruggs had walked away from the shooting scene outside of Discount Tobacco, also on W. Main Street, and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“During the investigation, officers learned that an altercation had taken place in the Jewel’s Market parking lot between Scruggs and D’marucs Lee, 29, of Franklin. 

“Video surveillance captured the altercation, showing Lee take out a pistol and fire a shot at Scruggs,” an FPD news release reads in part. 

Lee left the scene and hours later turned himself into FPD where he allegedly told detevices that Scruggs assaulted him as he attempted to enter Jewel's Market.

“He stated the altercation then spilled into the parking lot where he had no choice but to defend himself by using his pistol.”

Lee was released, and no charges have been filed against either man. The case remains under investigation by the Franklin Police Department and the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
