Tennessee’s 5th and 9th Congressional primaries are heating up with high-profile endorsements, including influence from President Donald Trump, as early voting is underway.
Trump endorsed State Sen. Brent Taylor (R-Memphis) in his bid to represent the recently redrawn 9th Congressional District.
In a July 13 social media post, Trump praised Taylor, who he said “is strongly supported by the most Highly Respected MAGA Warriors in Tennessee,” adding “HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
On Saturday, 9th District Democratic candidate and State Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) rallied alongside U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in Memphis.
In the 5th District Congressional race, former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam threw his support behind former state Agriculture Commissioner and Republican candidate Charlie Hatcher.
Haslam called Hatcher “authentic."
“His commonsense approach to getting back to the basics of what made our country great is refreshing," Haslam said.
Hatcher’s primary opponent, incumbent U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles, has long had the support of Trump.
