Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has endorsed Republican Charlie Hatcher for the 5th Congressional District seat over Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles — just two days before the primary election.
“I know his conservative values and how much he loves this country,” Lee said in a video posted to social media accounts on Tuesday. “Charlie has stood with President [Donald] Trump since day one.”
Hatcher previously served as the Commissioner of Agriculture in the Lee administration, and has a 25-year relationship with Lee, having previously worked as Lee’s veterinarian. The College Grove dairy farmer was the state veterinarian from 2009-2018.
“In Congress, I will work hard, serve people, and get the job done by pursuing sensible, problem-solving solutions. I will defend our conservative values, support President Trump’s agenda, and fight to lower the cost of living for Tennessee families,” Hatcher said in a statement.
While Hatcher and Lee both tout their support of Trump, the president has endorsed Ogles, saying he believes that Ogles “will be really enshrined as one of the best congressmen that you'll ever see.”
In a speech to the Nashville Rotary Club on Monday, Lee reflected on his time in office and spoke about the need for “civility, respect and finding common ground” in politics.
Throughout Ogles’ two terms, the controversial firebrand congressman has made a name for himself in part by thumbing his nose at critics, including last year when the Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville condemned Ogles’ blatantly anti-Muslim statements. Ogles called the Federation’s comments “stupid.”
