Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution located in Spring Hill, has shipped its first battery cells to the neighboring General Motors assembly plant.
The facility will produce millions of battery cells for the electric vehicles such as the Cadillac Lyriq that are produced at GM’s plant next door. Ultium Cells said in a release that shipments to other plants will increase as additional production lines are added.
“This moment has been years in the making, and I’m grateful to the thousands of contractors, community partners, and team members who have worked tirelessly to make this moment a reality,” Chris Desautels, Ultium Cells plant director, said in the release. “We’ve built a great team here in Spring Hill, and we’re proud of this world-class facility.”
The $2.3 billion Ultium Cells facility is said to create 1,700 jobs. It is the second plant to become operational for the venture.
