Out-of-Print

It’s been 12 years since filmmaker/movie nerd Julia Marchese released Out of Print, her 2014 documentary on the historic L.A. theater New Beverly Cinema (where she was an employee) and its efforts to keep film preservation alive as digital cinema began to take over multiplexes. She interviewed many cinephiles (including famous filmmakers like Kevin Smith, Joe Dante and Edgar Wright) who are avowed New Bev regulars. I actually reviewed the movie in these pages when that celluloid nut Quentin Tarantino bought the theater, and Marchese posted the doc online after being forced out by new management. The film is now getting some big-screen love after a decade of appearing mostly on streaming and VOD platforms; several nationwide theaters even programmed it for the recent Art House Theater Day. Considering how filmmakers like Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Ryan Coogler and others have fought to make sure that their pictures are shown in various formats — including 35 mm and 70 mm — and audiences are still flocking to theaters where movies can still flicker, it certainly appears that films on actual film aren’t going away anytime soon.
